Description

Postnatal Recovery Massage: Closing the Bones on the Massage Table A 1-Day Immersive Training

  • Are you a doula, perinatal practitioner, bodyworker, therapist, women’s circle facilitator, healer, or anyone who supports women through birth and life’s threshold?
  • Would you like to be able to offer your clients a gentle, effective and deeply nurturing treatment that helps them heal, return to their centre, and feel genuinely cared for after one of the biggest physical and emotional experiences of their lives?
  • Inspired by the traditional postnatal ritual of Closing the Bones, the Postnatal Recovery Massage is a modified version of the ceremony performed on a massage table rather than on the floor. It combines rebozo rocking of the pelvis with an extensive massage of the abdomen, hips, ribs, chest, shoulders and arms, and finishes with a binding of the head, pelvis and feet with rebozos.
  • This technique was developed by Sophie Messager, who has been offering and teaching Closing the Bones since 2013 and has trained over 1500 professionals in rebozo bodywork, together with osteopath Teddy Brookes. Together they have taught this massage to over 130 professionals since 2019.
  • You will not only learn this technique in depth and leave able to offer it to your clients straight away, you will also experience it yourself. This matters, because feeling what this does in your own body is part of understanding how to offer it well.
  • You will receive an extensive and unique handout combining traditional wisdom and scientific evidence, with descriptions, photographs, video tutorial links, and the effects of each technique on the joints, muscles and organs. You will also gain access to a private community of over 500 like-minded practitioners who have trained in closing the bones and/or this work.
  • The group is kept small, a maximum of 14 students, to ensure you receive detailed individual support throughout the day.

What people have said:

  • “What a wonderful, professional, well constructed and instructive course with plenty of time for step by step practical, complemented by Teddy’s expertise and Sophie’s organic shamanism and such a wonderful community of like minded bodyworkers.” Jenni Tribe, Therapist
  • “Sophie and Teddy have taken all that is special about Closing the Bones and fused her energy-work approach with his osteopathic technique to create something extraordinary. It is truly a celebration of the postpartum body.” Charlotte Filcek, Doula
  • “As an osteopath this experience has been invaluable in improving my practice with postnatal patients, in fact all of my patients.” Rob Ballard, Osteopath
  • “I really like when it is performed slowly, with the breath. On the floor for its magical sense of ritual and the table for its sense of going deep.” Kamila Bombeiros, Massage therapist and doula

Practicalities

  • The day runs from 9am to 6pm.
  • We will be practising a massage covering the pelvis, abdomen and chest so please wear comfortable clothing. Soft trousers or leggings are preferable to jeans, and if you wish to keep your bra on, a soft bra is more comfortable than a wired one.
  • Tea, coffee and snacks are provided. There will be a longer break for a a bring and share lunch.
  • We love babies and children, which is why we have to say with a heavy heart that they are too distracting for this training. You are welcome to bring a baby if you can bring another adult to care for them nearby, or if you have a breastfed baby who can stay close with someone else until feeding time.
