Transform Your Relationship with Your Wellbeing, Your Voice, and Your Power

You feel called to the drum, but you do not know how to start, and how to keep going.

What if you could sustain the shifts that drumming creates, not just for a month, but for an entire year? What if you could move from discovering drumming as medicine to becoming a drum keeper yourself?

This isn’t just another course. This is an initiation into a revolutionary practice that women have used for millennia to access power, wisdom, and healing.

Are You Ready to Go Deeper?

You feel drawn to the drum, or you’ve felt what drumming can do. Maybe you’ve taken a workshop, gone to a drum circle, tried drum microdosing, or felt the call to rhythm. You’ve experienced how just a few minutes of drumming that shift your nervous system and reconnect you to something ancient and true. Or you feel drawn to bring the ancient power of the drum into your life.

You’re craving having more of this in your life:

  • A practice that evolves with you through the seasons and cycles of a full year
  • The skills and confidence to use drumming for whatever life brings, not just calm, but grief, joy, transformation
  • A community of women who understand that this isn’t just “wellness” : it’s a reclamation of something that was always ours
  • To become a source of medicine yourself

You want to become a drum keeper : someone who knows how to work with rhythm as a tool for transformation, who can hold space for herself and eventually others, who carries this ancient medicine into the modern world.

If this speaks to you, welcome.

Most people discover drumming and think, “This is amazing! I should do this more often.” Then life happens. The drum sits in the corner. The practice fades.

This collective is different.

Over the year, you’ll move from sporadic practice to embodied mastery. From tentative to confident. From “I drum sometimes” to “I am a drum keeper.”

You’ll learn to drum through joy and rage, grief and celebration, winter’s rest and summer’s fire. You’ll understand the neuroscience AND the spiritual aspects of it. You’ll build the kind of practice that becomes woven into who you are.

And you’ll do it supported by women who are walking the same path.

I Know the Resistance That Comes Up

“I’m not consistent enough for a year-long commitment.”
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about seasons. Some months you’ll dive deep. Some months you’ll do the minimum. The fortnightly calls create gentle accountability without pressure.

“What if I fall behind or can’t keep up?”
There’s no “behind.” The wheel of the year naturally has times of intensity and times of rest. We honour both. All calls are recorded. Move at your own pace.

“A full year feels like a lot.”
It is. That’s the point. Quick fixes don’t create lasting transformation. This is about integration, not information. About becoming, not just learning.

“What if I’m still too much of a beginner?”
Perfect. We start with foundations and build progressively. We drum intuitively, there is no “right” rhythm. We’re not training performers, we’re reclaiming an ancient practice that belongs to all women.

What you really want is:

✨ A practice that deepens over time instead of fading away
✨ Skills you can trust when you need them most
✨ A community that shows up month after month
✨ To stop consuming wellness and start embodying medicine

This is why I’ve created this year long collective.

four seasons with the drum

Your Year Long Journey Through the Seasons

We begin in the dark of winter (at the beginning of the Celtic Spring: Imbolc) and complete in the dark of winter (Winter Solstice), moving through the full cycle of the year. 24 fortnightly calls will guide you through four seasonal phases, each one deepening your relationship with the drum and yourself.

PHASE ONE: FOUNDATIONS (Months 1-3)

Winter into Spring | February – April

Your First Beat
Ground into the basics with confidence. Master drum microdosing as your foundation practice. Set your intention for the year. Make your altar. Understand the neuroscience of why drumming regulates your nervous system. Learn to set clear intentions and track your experiences. Choose your drum. Begin your relationship with the drum as a sacred tool.

Listening to Your Rhythm
Discover your unique rhythm, the way YOUR body wants to drum. Explore how rhythm creates entrainment between body and drum. Learn to feel where rhythm lives in your body. Practice listening before playing.

Embodied Drumming
Move beyond “just drumming” into full-body expression. Understand the connection between movement, breath, and rhythm. Prepare for the energy of spring growth.

Seasonal alignment: The rising energy of Spring. Celtic calendar : Imbolc’ (beginning of Spring), Spring Equinox (Balance), moving towards the energy of Beltane (Fertility)

PHASE TWO: EXPRESSION (Months 4-6)

Spring into Summer | May – July

Drumming Your Joy
Learn to drum for celebration and pleasure. Understand dopamine, oxytocin, and the neuroscience of joy. Give yourself permission to be LOUD.

Drumming Your Fire
This is where it gets revolutionary. Learn to drum for expression of anger, boundaries, and solar plexus power. Understand how suppressed anger lives in the body. Practice fierce rhythms. Take up space.

Drumming Together
Explore community rhythms and collective power. Experience the combination of wrapping and drumming practice (pelvic wrapping integrated with drumming). Understand how women’s circles amplify individual practice. Learn to witness and be witnessed.

Seasonal alignment: The full energy of summer, Celtic calendar: Beltane (Fertility), Summer Solstice.

PHASE THREE: HARVEST & RELEASE (Months 7-9)

Summer into Autumn | August – October

Drumming Harvest
Learn to drum for gratitude and celebration for what you’ve grown. Explore the energy of Lammas – the first harvest. Practice drumming your accomplishments, your growth, your becoming. Understand how to mark completion before you let go. Honour what you’ve cultivated through spring and summer.

Drumming Letting Go
Work with the natural shedding energy of autumn. Drum to help release what’s no longer serving you. Drum for the endings, transitions, and closures life brings. Create ceremonies for letting go with grace. Understand that release is making space for what comes next.

Drumming the Threshold
Stand at the edge between light and dark, life and death, holding and releasing. Work with Samhain energy – the thinning of the veil. Learn to drum at liminal spaces and major life transitions. Practice holding paradox: grief AND gratitude, death AND rebirth, shadow AND light. This is deep work – you’ll be ready.

Seasonal alignment: Abundance, gratitude and letting go. Celtic calendar : Lammas (First Harvest festival), Autumn Equinox (balance), Samhain ( liminal threshold).

PHASE FOUR: INTEGRATION (Months 10-11)

Autumn into Winter | November – December

Drumming Rest
Learn the counter-cultural practice of drumming for rest, not activation. Explore trance states and meditation with rhythm. Practice slow, soft beats. Understand that rest is revolutionary.

Drumming Return & Becoming a Drum Keeper
Create your signature practice that holds everything you’ve learned. Celebrate your journey Attend a celebration ceremony crowning you as a drum keeper. Understand how to share drumming with others. Receive your completion and choose what comes next.

Seasonal alignment: Moving into the dark, deep Winter rest. Celtic calendar: Samhain’s deep dark, Winter Solstice return of light

This Is Different From Anything Else Available

I’ve searched extensively for programs that combine long-term intuitive drumming practice with nervous system science, seasonal wisdom, and women’s empowerment, and I couldn’t find any.

You can find many drum circles, drum technique courses, music therapy courses, shamanic drumming courses, and wellness/meditation memberships.

But I haven’t found anywhere that offers:

✓ A structured year-long monthly intuitive drumming curriculum
✓ Fortnightly accountability and live teaching
✓ Both neuroscience AND ancestral wisdom
✓ Explicit focus on women’s wellbeing and reclamation
✓ Seasonal energy as a guiding framework
✓ Progressive skill-building from beginner to drum keeper
✓ Revolutionary, women-centred lens on drumming as medicine

This collective bridges the analytical mind with ancient practice. The PhD with the shamanic knowing. The evidence base with the soul work. It’s designed specifically for women who refuse to choose between science and spirit.

Who This Collective Is For

  • Have experienced the power of drumming and want to go much deeper
  • Are drawn to seasonal living and cyclical practice
  • Value both evidence-based approaches and ancient wisdom
  • Want to build a practice that lasts, not just feel good temporarily
  • Are ready to stop consuming wellness and start embodying medicine
  • Crave authentic community with like-minded women
  • Can commit to fortnightly calls and regular practice (even imperfectly)
  • Are curious about becoming someone who can hold space, not just receive it
  • Want your personal transformation to ripple out into the world
Sophie Messager standing in a meadow holding a drum

This collective might not be for you if:

  • You’re looking for quick fixes or instant results
  • You prefer purely performance-based or technical drumming instruction
  • You’re uncomfortable with spiritual or ceremonial elements
  • You can’t commit to regular practice between calls
  • You’re seeking passive learning without embodied practice
  • You want everything delivered at once rather than seasonally
  • You’re not ready to look at uncomfortable emotions

The path from student to keeper requires commitment, patience, and willingness to meet yourself fully. If that feels like too much right now, that’s okay, we all have our unique timing.

Why This Practice Matters Now

For centuries, women marked time differently.

We witnessed seasons, cycles, transitions. We drummed for births and deaths, harvests and losses, joy and grief. The drum was how we processed change, honoured thresholds, and remembered who we were.

Then we were taught to measure our lives in metrics and achievements. To analyse rather than witness. To set goals rather than sense what’s emerging. To consume wellness rather than embody medicine.

The Women Drum Keepers Collective is an act of remembering.

Not a workshop. Not a course. Not another thing to complete and move on from.

A full year of returning to what your grandmothers knew: that transformation happens through seasons, not sprints. That you need a community to hold you through cycles of growth and rest. That the drum isn’t a tool for self-improvement – it’s medicine for becoming whole.

Eleven months. Twenty-four fortnightly calls. Moving through the wheel of the year together.

About me: Science meets soul

Sophie drum close up
Close up photo of Book the beat of your own drum by Sophie Messager placed on a log beside a drum in nature

I bridge worlds that aren’t supposed to touch.

I have a PhD in reproductive physiology. I spent 25 years as a research scientist. I speak the language of the nervous system, brainwave entrainment, polyvagal theory, and peer-reviewed studies. I left science behind to work as a doula and antenatal educator for over 10 years.

I’m also a shamanic practitioner, and drum keeper who has drummed for hundreds of women through pregnancy, birth, the postpartum, loss, death, grief, transition and transformation. I speak the language of ritual, ceremony, and ancient medicine.

Most people think you have to choose. Evidence-based OR intuitive. Scientific OR spiritual. Professional OR woo.

I refuse that binary. So do most of the women I work with.

Over the last 13 years, I’ve developed a practice that honours both: the neuroscience of why drumming works AND the soul-deep knowing that our grandmothers carried this medicine. The research that validates rhythm’s impact on trauma AND the ceremonies that heal what research can’t measure.

My book, The Beat of Your Own Drum, explores this intersection : how drumming has been used across cultures for women’s wisdom, wellbeing, and power, and why modern science is finally catching up to what women have always known.

I’m not a professional performer. I won’t teach you complex drumming rhythms. But I will teach you how to use the drum as medicine for your nervous system, your emotions, your power, and your transformation, in a way that is both accessible and profound.

What Women Say About This Work

This course was an interesting blend of practical drumming, science and spirituality, I feel reconnected with drumming. I loved being in a small group with other women. The course was delivered in a straightforward and informative way. The drum technique is very simple. Anyone can drum, so if you are feeling unsure about joining the course, just do it! Helen

Sophie’s Drumming as Medicine course was such a powerful experience. She creates a space where drumming feels welcoming, accessible, and deeply empowering for women, and I loved how she blended education with embodiment. Learning about drumming as an act of reclaiming power and resisting the patriarchy was incredibly inspiring. I walked away feeling more connected, confident, and lit up. Natalie Duq, Music therapist

I really liked how Sophie naturally guided us to find our own drumbeat & then sync together. Felt really nurtured & embraced in a safe circle space to share with others. Drumming became for me now daily practice of self – care & self- love helping me to ground into my own energy. Created small altar after 1st class as guided by Sophie which continues to help me staying aligned with my daily drumming practice intention. Course helped me to activate my ancient roots connecting me with Mother Earth’s heartbeat. Would recommend this course to any woman who is curious to explore how powerful & yet simple drumming as medicine really is . S.U.

This course was eye opening to me. From not being able to pick up my drum to playing daily, wow. Such a huge shift inside of me. Thank you Sophie. Katja, Midwife

How this collective works

Sophie Messager holding a penchant with the quote "Trust in your hearts wisdom"

This is designed for real women’s lives.

I know you’re busy. I know you have responsibilities. I know you can’t be “on” every day. The fortnightly structure creates rhythm without overwhelm.

Show up in the way that serves you. If you have energy, dive deep into everything. If life is full, attend what you can and catch up with recordings. The live calls carry special magic,  group energy amplifies individual practice, but recordings ensure you won’t miss content.

Practice between calls according to your capacity. Some weeks you’ll drum daily. Some weeks you’ll squeeze in 5 minutes twice. We move with the seasons, which means we honour both growth and rest.

Course materials release monthly, aligning with our collective journey. You’ll have lifetime access to all recordings and resources.

This isn’t about perfectionism. It’s about growing your own unique way of working with the drum.

Common questions

A drum on a log in nature

What if I’ve never drummed before?
That’s perfect. We start with absolute foundations in Month 1. If you can tap your hand on a surface, you can do this.

What if I’ve already done one of your 4-weeks drumming courses?
Even better! This is the natural next step. We’ll build on what you learned and go much, much deeper.

What if I miss calls?
All calls are recorded with lifetime access. Watch when you can. The magic of live participation is powerful but not required.

What if I can’t commit to daily practice?
That’s realistic. We encourage daily drum microdosing (5 min) but we know that life happens. Fortnightly calls keep you connected even when home practice is sparse.

Can I join late?
The collective is designed as a cohort moving through the year together. Late joining means missing foundational months. If you’re considering this, email me to discuss.

What happens after the 11 months end?
Some women will feel complete. Some will want to continue deeper work. I will consider designing a second year based on interest. You’ll have the option to re-enroll or complete your journey.

Do I need a special drum?
We’ll cover this thoroughly in Month 1. Many women use affordable frame drums (£30-£100). What matters most is your relationship with the drum, not the price tag.

The Drum Is Calling You Home

There’s a reason you’re still reading this.

The drum is one of humanity’s oldest instruments. Women have drummed for millennia, for birth, death, healing, celebration, ceremony, power, and transformation. This isn’t new age wellness. This is a reclamation of something that was always ours.

You’re not looking for another course to consume. You’re looking to become.

  • Become someone who trusts her own rhythm.
  • Become someone who can hold space for joy AND rage.
  • Become someone who knows how to regulate her own nervous system.
  • Become someone who carries medicine in her hands.
  • Become someone who isn’t afraid of making noise.
  • Become a drum keeper.

The collective begins in 8 weeks. We start in the dark of winter and at the cusp of Spring, planting seeds. By December, you’ll harvest what you’ve grown.

Are you ready?
