This workshop is taught by doula and healer Sophie Messager and osteopath Teddy Brookes
Are you a doula, a birthworker, a therapist or teacher who supports new mothers?
Would you like to be able to give your clients a gentle, effective, nurturing treatment and ritual to nourish, support and comfort them after birth?
Inspired by a traditional Ecuadoran postnatal massage called closing the bones, the Postnatal Recovery Massage (PRM) is done on a massage table and involves using a rebozo shawl to rock and bind the mother’s body, together with an extensive massage of the abdomen, hips, waist, ribs, chest and arms with a special warming oil.
It is designed to help realign and balance a new mother, as well as help her return to her centre, both physically and energetically.
What makes this workshop so special? This unique technique was developed by doula and healer Sophie Messager (who has been offering and teaching the floor work version of this massage for over 5 years) together with Cambridge osteopath Teddy Brookes. The technique took over a year and a half to develop over many sessions.
To ensure good tuition, this workshop is reserved to a small group of up to 12 students.
It is a deeply spiritual workshop, where you will not only learn this technique in depth, and leave able to offer it to your clients, but you will also experience for yourself how nurturing, powerful and deeply healing this ritual is, as well as learning to provide this treatment as part of a single person or group ceremony.
You will be given an extensive, unique and detailed handout which includes a mix of traditional wisdom and scientific evidence. Each technique is accompanied by a description, a picture, a tutorial video link, and its effects on the various joints, muscles and organs.
You will also gain access to a secret Facebook group for people who have done the closing the bones training, where you can share knowledge and connect with an vibrant group of nearly 400 like minded people.
Here’s what our guinea pig trainees have said about this workshop:
“Knowing Sophie and Teddy as I do, I knew they would design something that is both relaxing and effective. I was not prepared for how beautifully the movements flow into each other, and how true to the spirit of Closing the Bones they have stayed. For people who find floor work tiring or painful, I highly recommend learning these new techniques” Maddie McMahon, Doula.
” This new version of the post natal ceremony blends effective rebozo (shawl) massage techniques and lymphatic drainage massage to support post natal mamas. Rather fabulous it is too!” Emma Kenny, Massage therapist.
“I think one if the reasons I like the massage that you have developed for the table as it feels like a modern way of adapting the traditional massage. It feels like a new technique, a therapists technique. I also like being able to connect to the anatomical benefits. I want to practise giving the massage and feel newly inspired.” Katie Oliffe, Doula
“Closing the bones on the table is quite an experience. The techniques feel different. I really like when its perfomed slowly, with the breath. I like both the ground and the table tevhniques. On the floor for its magical sense of ritual and the table for it’s sense of ‘going deep'” Kamilla Bombeiros, Massage therapist and doula
This workshop costs £180 per person and includes one year membership as a practitioner on

Practicalities of the day

This massage is done on a massage table so if you are travelling by car and have one you can bring, please do!

We will be practising a massage which includes exposing and massaging the pubic bone to the chest and shoulders so please wear comfy clothing (soft trousers/leggings/jogging bottoms etc are comfier than jeans for this, and if you wish to keep your bra on, then a soft bra is preferable to a wired one)

Babies in arms (non mobile) are welcome to attend the course with their mother. Please be advised that to allow for the learning of other participants you may be asked to step outside of the workshop room if your baby disrupts the course. Please be aware that your learning may be impaired by the presence of your child.

Refreshments: Tea, coffee, drinks and snacks will be provided at the venue. There will be a longer break for lunch; and we may ask you to bring something to share for lunch.
