Beat the Distraction: Drumming Techniques for ADHD

Is ADHD stopping you from sharing your gifts with the world?

In this workshop, I will show you how to manage your ADHD with the drum

Are you someone who struggles with focus, time management, and overwhelming emotions despite your many strengths and talents? Do you find yourself constantly fighting against a mind that seems to either race at a thousand miles per hour or get completely stuck? Do you exhaust yourself trying to appear “normal” while your brain works in beautiful but non-linear ways? If so, you’re experiencing the reality of living with ADHD – a neurological difference that affects every aspect of daily functioning.

ADHD is not a problem of knowing what to do; it is a problem of doing what you know.”

Dr. Russell Barkley

Having worked with many people with ADHD since my diagnosis, as well as navigating my own ADHD journey, and having conducted numerous interviews with women recently diagnosed or suspecting they have ADHD, one thing has been clear to me: traditional time management techniques just do not work.

Many holistic & perinatal professionals, healers and creatives carry the exact same struggles – fighting against time pressure, emotional dysregulation, and the exhausting cycle of hyperfocus and burnout.

I have seen so many brilliant women, who have incredible gifts and abilities, yet are crippled with overwhelm and executive function challenges.

Women who stay up all night to complete work that should have taken hours. Women who can’t seem to start a project until the very last minute despite their best intentions. Women who tell themselves that they just need a better planner, a new app, or more discipline…Except those solutions never work in the long run.

Because the thing is: you could have the most complex organisation system in the world and still struggle. You cannot fix neurological differences with neurotypical solutions – it’s like trying to fuel a diesel engine with regular petrol.

For so many of us with ADHD, traditional approaches can actually increase our stress and shame while failing to address our underlying needs.

We deserve tools that work with our brains, not against them.

I want to share my experience in how I’ve learned to harness the power of rhythm and drumming to regulate the ADHD brain, so you can feel more balanced, focused, and able to access your unique gifts.

Sophie’s knowledge and passion about drumming came through in this masterclass. It was great to experience the feeling of the drumming whilst also being given the science about how it works.

In this workshop, over a 90-min live class on Zoom, I’ll share my ADHD drumming strategies with you:

  • Understanding how ADHD affects your brain’s executive functions and regulation
  • Recognising your ADHD patterns and what triggers dysregulation
  • Learning ways to use drumming that help regulate attention and emotions
  • Creating a simple drumming routine for ADHD challenges
  • Incorporating short drumming breaks into your day to prevent overwhelm
  • Building a sustainable practice that works with your ADHD brain, not against it

By the end of this workshop, you’ll have a better understanding of your nervous system, as well as simple, practical rhythm-based strategies to manage focus, regulate emotions, and harness your ADHD brain’s natural strengths.

This workshop will include a blend of neuroscience and somatic practices. Expect evidence-based explanations of how drumming affects the ADHD brain, alongside hands-on drumming experiences!

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for women with ADHD (diagnosed or self-identified) who are seeking alternative, body-based approaches to managing their symptoms.

No musical experience or even a drum required to attend (though you may want to get one after the workshop)

It is for you if you’re tired of traditional “just try harder” approaches and are open to exploring how rhythm and movement can work with your natural brain wiring.

What makes this workshop special?

Drawing from my 20 years of experience as a research scientist, my 15 years of experience as a self-employed educator, drumming practitioner and healer, and my experience as a woman diagnosed with ADHD at midlife, this workshop combines neuroscience research with practical techniques. This experience will help you to transform your relationship with your ADHD brain through the ancient practice of drumming.

My background straddles science, traditional wisdom and somatic practices, bridging neurological understanding with embodied rhythm work. I offer a unique blend of biological explanations, practical techniques, and real-life stories.

Over the last 3 years, I’ve transformed my relationship with my ADHD from something that controlled and limited me to a neurological difference I understand and can work with. Drumming has been my most consistent and effective management tool.

For example, when I first discovered how drumming affected my focus, I was shocked. After just 5 minutes of rhythmic drumming, I could sit down and write for two hours straight – something that previously difficult without medication. I also discovered how certain drum rhythms elicited the same sensation in my brain as when I took ADHD meds. I’ve developed a comprehensive system of rhythm practices that addresses ADHD challenges, from emotional regulation to task initiation to time management.

Magic happens when women sit in circle, especially when drumming as well. Sophie holds a beautifully supportive space for us all to be in, feel the rhythm and the magic. I feel that I have learned and remembered a lot about myself, I feel more connected within. Truly beautiful!
